Chamberlin, Powell and Bon
Chamberlin, Powell and Bon, the first book on the architects of the Golden Lane Estate and Barbican, written by Elain Harwood and published by RIBA Publications with English Heritage and the Twentieth Century Society, is to be published on 8 November.
Based on new archival research and interviews with the architects’ families and surviving partners and their assistants, Chamberlin, Powell and Bon gives incisive accounts of the development of these two key post-war estates. Together the estates illustrate the changing styles of post-war architecture in Britain and offer a model for modern urban living today. The book also describes in detail CP&B’s other major commissions, beginning with Joe Chamberlin’s work at the Festival of Britain and including New Hall, Cambridge (now Murray Edwards College) and their major extensions to Leeds University, which show their interest in technical innovation as well as planning on a grand yet liveable scale.
Chamberlin, Powell and Bon is beautifully illustrated with new photographs by James O. Davies and drawings from the architects’ newly revealed archive, most previously unpublished.
Elain Harwood is a historian with English Heritage and an authority on post-war architecture.

Permalink Reply by jacqui on December 15, 2011 at 16:34 I have been to the Hall to see availability for a life drawing classes to start next year.
The only day it is available for us is Tuesdays @ £25 per hour
costs will be model £?
Tutor £?
Hall £ 50 ( they dont give discount to residents which is a bit unfair)
Eisels/storage?
To make this work we will have to work out costs and overheads, and then charge a termly fee, this means setting up an account and having a small gropup of vols to manage expences.
Any offers or suggestions.
Permalink Reply by Christine Clifford on December 15, 2011 at 17:43 The hall is free to community based events but I suppose this does not really fit that does it?
It might also be worth checking existing courses nearby in case we cannot offer anything more affordable- I'll do that and let you know.
Did Bev say she could help?

Permalink Reply by bill gilliam on February 2, 2012 at 23:55 There is also a small studio on the GLE for the use of the residents. I am happy to show anyone how to use the studio. The lights / backdrops / reflectors / flash synching for general portraiture / still life. Get a pro looking shot of your family or friends. Even if you just want to photograph something to flog on e bay.
I've forgotten everything I learned about the dark room process but will fix up the darkroom ready for use. Anyone wanting to use the dark room will need to have paper and chemicals before they start.
Just get in touch if you are interested.
