At the recent Advice Surgery that Will Pimlott and I held I was prompted by one of our Golden Lane residents to enquire if there were cycle training courses available especially for children.
I have received a reply from the Road Danger Reduction and and Behaviour Change Manager who writes as follows:

"... we try to ensure that new cyclists in the City are trained to be as safe as possible. We offer this free of charge to all of our schools, residents and workers and one of our roles is promoting the opportunity to take training. We would therefore be very happy to arrange cycle training for children on the Golden Lane estate. The training courses are organised by our supplier CYCLE TRAINING UK....simply ask any resident with an interest to email our team directly with details of who would like to take the training."

Can I urge anyone interested on Golden Lane or the Barbican to email RDR@cityoflondon.gov.uk as soon as possible?

I just emailed them. Let's see what happens - thanks for the information!

I had a reply - the City of London Police only run a cycle training course for year 6 children (10/11 year olds) in the city schools.

They recommended I look into Cycle Training UK, as I have younger children. Unfortunately the City does not offer subsidised sessions with them (many boroughs do) and at £70 per hour for a 1:1 session it is quite a lot of money.

On 17th June to coincide with Open Garden Squares Weekend and Bike week there is going to be a pop up cycling event in Fann Street. I don't know all the details but will check with the organiser to see if he has contacts who could help.

Thanks for the information Councillor Durcan, in addition to providing free cycle training for the youth in the City, the City needs to consider accessibility to these courses, consider providing all those under the age of 18 years with dedicated cycle training lessons during the half-term holidays, full-term holidays, and summer holidays.

Please raise the possibilities of providing free bicycles, safety helmet, lights, and the latest lock, for all those under the age of 18 living within the City.

The City needs to set an example to other local authorities, that cycle training, along with free bicycles, will encourage the youth to use cycles later in life, and perhaps become less reliant on cars.
