Book

Chamberlin, Powell and Bon

Chamberlin, Powell and Bon, the first book on the architects of the Golden Lane Estate and Barbican, written by Elain Harwood and published by RIBA Publications with English Heritage and the Twentieth Century Society, is to be published on 8 November.

Based on new archival research and interviews with the architects’ families and surviving partners and their assistants, Chamberlin, Powell and Bon gives incisive accounts of the development of these two key post-war estates.  Together the estates illustrate the changing styles of post-war architecture in Britain and offer a model for modern urban living today.  The book also describes in detail CP&B’s other major commissions, beginning with Joe Chamberlin’s work at the Festival of Britain and including New Hall, Cambridge (now Murray Edwards College) and their major extensions to Leeds University, which show their interest in technical innovation as well as planning on a grand yet liveable scale.

Chamberlin, Powell and Bon is beautifully illustrated with new photographs by James O. Davies and drawings from the architects’ newly revealed archive, most previously unpublished.

Elain Harwood is a historian with English Heritage and an authority on post-war architecture.

Lease extension information

Lease Extensions

Leaseholders have the right to purchase an extension to their lease, and the links below provide some useful reference information for anyone interested in doing so. Note that none of the below constitutes advice or recommendation from the GLERA Committee. It is a personal decision whether to purchase an extension to one's lease, and anyone considering this may wish to consult a solicitor to assist in the process.

It is worth noting that the cost to purchase a lease extension increases by an additional element known as the "marriage value" if the remaining term of one's current lease is 80 years or less. For example if the original lease was granted in 1980, and was granted for 125 years, then the additional "marriage value" cost will start to apply 45 years after the original lease began, in this example as of 2025. Leaseholders may wish to consider this and the specifics of the dates of their own lease, when making a decision as to whether to purchase an extension or not.

The following links provide more information that a leaseholder may wish to consider.

A free advice booklet from the Leasehold Advisory Service. This is rather technical in nature.

A Guide to Leasehold Extensions by the Barbican Residents Association. This has been written specifically for Barbican Esate Leaseholders and reflects a specific agreement between the Housing Department and the Barbican Residents Association. While the specifics of that agreement do not cover Golden Lane, this is a useful guide to the process that the City may be willing to follow, and serves as a good starting point for any such discussions with the City. Note that the Barbican Residents Association are not able to offer individual support in the understanding and application of the process in this document. Any questions about the process of applying for a Leasehold Extension with the City should be directed to the Golden Lane Estate Office.
