Event Description

Built 150 years ago the Holborn Viaduct transformed neighbourhoods and revolutionised City access. Here, in the Barbican on the eve of World Town Planning Day, planner Lester Hillman will explore how the Viaduct solved millennia-old Fleet River problems.

The richly illustrated presentation will uncover the forgotten landscape of London Fen, Heavy Hill, the Hollow Bourne, Faggeswelle Brooke and ancient military causeways.

Today the newly restored Viaduct, glinting in the sun, offers a portal to the proposed new Museum of London and the arrival of Crossrail brings a whole new dimension to the City's emerging 'Cultural Mile'.
