Event Description

Imagine Golden Lane meeting

Saturday 18th February

Community Cafe 2-00pm

Presentation on the Golden Lane Bike Project 3-00pm

In response to the pandemic, 2020 saw a major move towards encouraging cycling and walking in the City of London and across the capital. As an alternative to public transport and car use, making the most of the fresh air suddenly became very attractive. A report Healthy and Safe summarised an initiative to encourage cycling on Golden Lane Estate. The publication brought together a survey of residents; an overview of current storage on the Estate; an analysis of places to build new cycle storage; and suggestions for improved ways of creating safe and secure bicycle storage. Residents realised that encouraging people to walk and cycle was a good idea but a key aspect for making this happen was the provision of safe storage for cycles, something sorely missing on the estate. Following publication of the report, a grant application was made to the City of London Community Infrastructure Levy fund to encourage cycling; refurbish existing bike sheds; add new public bicycle racks and create a set of safe and secure places for cycle storage. The application was successful.

Consultations have now taken place to establish the best approach to installing new equipment and improving existing facilities. Local residents and experts in consultation STBY, led this process. The next step was the appointment of project managers to implement the plans. The project managers have had discussions with the police and with the planning department ahead of submission of a planning application.

There will be an update on Saturday 18th February. Community Cafe at 2-00pm followed by the update at 3-00pm – Ralph Perrin Centre.
