Chamberlin, Powell and Bon, the first book on the architects of the Golden Lane Estate and Barbican, written by Elain Harwood and published by RIBA Publications with English Heritage and the Twentieth Century Society, is to be published on 8 November.
Based on new archival research and interviews with the architects’ families and surviving partners and their assistants, Chamberlin, Powell and Bon gives incisive accounts of the development of these two key post-war estates. Together the estates illustrate the changing styles of post-war architecture in Britain and offer a model for modern urban living today. The book also describes in detail CP&B’s other major commissions, beginning with Joe Chamberlin’s work at the Festival of Britain and including New Hall, Cambridge (now Murray Edwards College) and their major extensions to Leeds University, which show their interest in technical innovation as well as planning on a grand yet liveable scale.
Chamberlin, Powell and Bon is beautifully illustrated with new photographs by James O. Davies and drawings from the architects’ newly revealed archive, most previously unpublished.
Elain Harwood is a historian with English Heritage and an authority on post-war architecture.

Just wondering if there are any deals for residents - either membership wise or per visit (to the gym, classes and swimming pool)?
Opening times would be great too - thanks!
Lucy

Permalink Reply by Belhr on February 16, 2012 at 13:52 Can you just turn up to the classes, or do you need to book in advance? And what are the charges for classes (for non members, but estate residents), specifically for Pilates.
Thanks.

Permalink Reply by Steve Daszko on March 1, 2012 at 21:19 I have been to the gym now 2/3 times a week and it`s a great LC. The staff are very helpful as well. Highly recommended........especially with the low rate GL residents get! Not a "rip-off" like another certain club along Aldersgate Street!!!
Permalink Reply by Roland Jeffery on March 3, 2012 at 18:09 Though what Mr Whybrow is omitting to mention is that the free residents swims have been withdrawn unless you are over 60 - with no reason given. This is in spite of the fact that there was an explicit statement that they would be preserved shortly before the pool closed for works - a straightforward case of a promise broken.
Permalink Reply by Crescent Res on March 13, 2012 at 11:49 Having looked at the class timetable, Outside of the weekend morning classes there seems to very few classes for adults, at the times applicable to £15 p/mth GL Residents membership price ie: weekdays 9-12 & 2-5pm.
I could only find 2 gentle exercise classes and a short mat bowling group listed. The other classes look like they are for school children: junior dance, Junior Gym, Mini Tennis....and 1 Young at Heart class which is for over 50s???
Is there another membership deal for residents that actually includes access to the lunchtime and after 5pm adult classes on wkdays?
The Offer to Residents leaflet.pdf also lists
•Badminton
Tennis
• Netball
Are these included in the £15p/mth membership? What are the prices for use of the courts if not?
Thanks.
