Chamberlin, Powell and Bon, the first book on the architects of the Golden Lane Estate and Barbican, written by Elain Harwood and published by RIBA Publications with English Heritage and the Twentieth Century Society, is to be published on 8 November.
Based on new archival research and interviews with the architects’ families and surviving partners and their assistants, Chamberlin, Powell and Bon gives incisive accounts of the development of these two key post-war estates. Together the estates illustrate the changing styles of post-war architecture in Britain and offer a model for modern urban living today. The book also describes in detail CP&B’s other major commissions, beginning with Joe Chamberlin’s work at the Festival of Britain and including New Hall, Cambridge (now Murray Edwards College) and their major extensions to Leeds University, which show their interest in technical innovation as well as planning on a grand yet liveable scale.
Chamberlin, Powell and Bon is beautifully illustrated with new photographs by James O. Davies and drawings from the architects’ newly revealed archive, most previously unpublished.
Elain Harwood is a historian with English Heritage and an authority on post-war architecture.

GLERA are attempting to follow up some of the ongoing maintenance and repairs issues on the estate and we are compiling a list of current outstanding problems.
Please add to the list if there are any issues that you would like raise with GLERA so that we can try to get a resolution with the estate managers. Note that the first place to report a problem is in the book in the estate office and items should only be added to this list if unresolved.
1) The gutters around the Basterfield, Bayer, Stanley Cohen House roof (probably the whole estate) are not cleared every 3 months as agreed and therefore internal flooding is occurring.
2) The Second floor external concrete falling onto the corridor of Great Arthur House has been "patched" – however the cause is the rusting pipes inside the concrete and this requires an anti-rust treatment to avoid further rotting of the concrete. The treatment has not been done and therfore only create further damage.
3) Its taken a year to find the source of several leaks in Great Arthur flats. Residents have been obliged to live with drafty bathrooms where no panels on ceiling and bath have been put back for a year.
4) Decent homes have had a year’s guarantee of workmanship – residents are reporting that the cheap materials (used to replace the robust features of the old furnishings) Have already given rise to the following:
- Leaking taps
- Taps moving off the base of the sink and water leaking out of the base
- Broken plug chains
- Cracked toilet seats
- Shower hose broken – (on/off button)
- Toilet flush button broken
- Cupboards are chipped
- The design elements dysfunctional in that some doors don’t open in the convenient direction.
5) Cleaning of Great Arthur floors - mopping with bucket/water/soap has not been done for over a year.
6) Great Arthur House is still not securely closed and front door is still open – can we have a notice on the door so residents can pull it shut, at least?
7) Stores corridor in Bayer not being cleaned/swept
8) Replaced asphalt on 3rd floor Stanley Cohen House out of character (wrong colour).
