Book

Chamberlin, Powell and Bon

Chamberlin, Powell and Bon, the first book on the architects of the Golden Lane Estate and Barbican, written by Elain Harwood and published by RIBA Publications with English Heritage and the Twentieth Century Society, is to be published on 8 November.

Based on new archival research and interviews with the architects’ families and surviving partners and their assistants, Chamberlin, Powell and Bon gives incisive accounts of the development of these two key post-war estates.  Together the estates illustrate the changing styles of post-war architecture in Britain and offer a model for modern urban living today.  The book also describes in detail CP&B’s other major commissions, beginning with Joe Chamberlin’s work at the Festival of Britain and including New Hall, Cambridge (now Murray Edwards College) and their major extensions to Leeds University, which show their interest in technical innovation as well as planning on a grand yet liveable scale.

Chamberlin, Powell and Bon is beautifully illustrated with new photographs by James O. Davies and drawings from the architects’ newly revealed archive, most previously unpublished.

Elain Harwood is a historian with English Heritage and an authority on post-war architecture.

You can't as it contravenes the listing of the estate. You can however connect to the digital signal for the same services.
Hello Jale, Your flat should already be fitted with a digital socket comprising digital t.v, Dab radio and satellite. However, subscription to Sky is by private arrangement between the resident and Sky.

Hi thanks for the replies. I got Sky connected a few weeks ago but apparently the communal setup that we have needs updating, so far sky signal is being unreliable and sky services is being limited which makes having and paying for SKY+ practically pointless. As you can't record something while watching something else. The system that we have is 10 years old and needs updating. So I'd be very keen to know if anyone else is effected by it and if anything could be done to adjust the system to bring it up to date. Regards Jale

I were getting vertical bands either side of the screen, some channels horizontal so assumed it were my 6 yr old Samsung TV

New TV,new Sky+ box and still the same so i called MDTV who are the engineers to check the aerial.Said it were OK,must be the TV/Sky box.Had them both replaced under the gaurantee and still the same problem.MDTV out to check again and they told me the signal was fine.Third time they told me £93 plus VAT to check again.Or £303-13 to install a splitter wire to enable me to record on the Sky box.I wasnt told by Sky i would need a second wire until they installed the Sky box, after paying £135 for the box and installation! They get around it now by saying £30 for Standard Installation.I love the Sky channels but not the attitude, even though i've had Sky since 2005.Can record what i'm watching which is a bit pointless so not a happy bunny.

I understand your posting was 12 months ago so would be interested if you have sorted out the problem.

With thanks.Tony

Hi Tony,

I can so relate to your frustration. Yes for me it was a year ago, so I cancelled my contract asap. I didn't get my installation money back but the rest of the payments I made to Sky has been refunded in fact if I remember correctly they charged me for the days I had SKY till the cancellation despite it wasn't working fully. I wanted to get Virgin but at the time fibreoptic hadn't reach to this area so it wasn't possible. In the end I got BTvision and it was very easy to install and very good in many ways. Like Virgin it's got lots of programmes on demand as well as films. With an extra cost you can get SKY sport and ESPN. So if you're still in your 14 day cancellation period I recomend you to consider it.

I hope it helps.

Jale

Jale-Thanks for that info. Was told it wasn't a signal problem by MDTV,must be the new TV and new Sky+box. Now both replaced for a third time and ............... Unrepeatable!

I'm waiting until Virgin Optic gets us connected, mainly because i watch Sport on all Sky Channels and i think BTvision only does S/S 1 and 2.Sky were OK,gave me 50% discount for 6 months as they had assumed it were the Sky+ box that was at fault.Did you get vertical bands when you were connected but not on all the channels?

Sorry not replied before.

Tony
