In person and online events 24/27 Nov - Helping someone regularly? at Via Zoom & Golden lane estate

Many Golden lane residents help to look after a neighbour, spouse, family member or friend who needs your support. The person may have eg a short-term or long-term health condition, disability, frailty, substance misuse or a mental health condition. Did you know items such as picking up shopping, being a listening ear, picking up prescriptions, taking a person to appointments, helping with meals/ paperwork etc all come under the banner of being a "carer". In 2014 the government passed the Care Act, in which you have certain rights that local councils, businesses and our City Corporation needs to meet. Most residents think of a carer as a paid carer worker in a blue uniform. Without realising, the term carer is for those who are caregiving not paid to do so. CoL has a contract with City Connections (since 2019) to meet the needs of City residents/City workers who also have a caring responsibility. Here at City Carers Community, a resident group, we started in April 2020 to…See More

I'm interested to know any resident's experiences of full fibre (FTTH) Broadband (where you have had optical fibre cable installed directly into your home), as I am considering signing up.

  • Which provider did you sign up to?
  • Are you happy with the service?
  • Is it a reliable service?
  • Do you get the speeds that you were promised?
  • Have you needed to use their customer service (after installation) and if so has it been ok?

Please post here or direct message me if you prefer.

Thank you!

We have Community Fibre and have had excellent customer service and few problems
I have had community fibre for over a year it’s not very good at all . I have had so many issues and the speed is not at all what they promised and since kick down constant dropouts .
You also have to have a modem and a router and they had to drill a hole through my front door frame and run cables around to phone point .. I’m looking elsewhere now too let me know what you find.

Hi Jax

Thanks for sharing your experience.  It seems from the postings so far that most people have gone with Community Fibre and the different experiences are quite varied across the Estate.  It might be interesting to see which building each person is located in to see if the issues are related to specific buildings / parts of the infrastructure.

My understanding is that each provider runs their own fibre cable, so if you switch provider then the existing cable has to be replaced by the new provider.  This is one reason that I have so far held off.  I understand that this will change once Openreach provide service and can lay a cable that can be reused regardless of future changes in provider.  So I would be interested to know if your new provider can confirm if this is the case or not.

OK - thanks

Hi Peter,

We have Community Fibre in Hatfield House. We are happy with it especially when, after finding that they had uprated their service speeds, I called them and they doubled our speed to 400Mb at a lower cost. We have had no problem with service interruptions.

Sorry this sounds like an advert but we are happy with the service.

Tim

Hi Tim

Thanks - that's good to know - seems live a varied experience across the estate, but that some people are getting good speeds and service from them.

Peter
