Hi All,

What is the best approach to deal with a noisy neighbour above us in GAH. I have, on several occasions been up and spoken to them and, as usual the noise returns.

Its a constant source of sleep and evening disturbance ranging from cinematic experiences, techno music and then finished off with someone experimental keyboard playing.

What is the next thing I can do to get some peace? Is it best to contact COL or the police?

Hi James.  Am sorry to hear of your experience.  By the sounds of it, this noise goes on late at night.  Obviously, if its for prolonged periods at this time it is not acceptable.  Do you know if the people either side of these noisy neighbours have complained at all?  I guess in the first instance it is advisable to complain to management in the Estate Office, being Laurence Jones, the Estate Manager, or Ian Dowsett, the Senior Estate Officer and see what they say.

Of course, there is nothing to stop you contacting the local police either.  I hope you get it sorted.  I am lucky in that no one lives above me, as I am on the top floor of Crescent House!

Usually, a letter is sent from the Office to the 'noisy' neighbour, because they do take your word for this, even if you are the only one to complain.  I know from experience, as a while ago a neighbour living on the floor below me, but not under me complained that I was playing a loud radio, and I received a letter about it.  The problem was that I do not own a radio!  Also, this person complained about 'noise' from her next door neighbour, who was very quiet, and that of someone also on my landing, amongst others, and the Estate Office quickly 'acted'.  Unfortunately, this person was, to be polite, ultra 'sensitive', but we have records on our files that are not correct!  Luckily, this person has now moved away, so peace has been restored.

I hope you too find peace!  Good luck.  Let us know.

Sounds like a normal day on the estate for me. My windows are so thin I can hear people's conversations on their phones as they walk past and other things from my neighbours. Lovely

I am one of those sound sensitive people. But it is one of those things I guess that comes with living in London. People are inconsiderate though. I had a woman getting out of a black cab(I know the noise from ear now) and she was shouting about not having any change and getting quite aggressive. It woke me up. Then there were the group of drunken youths in the middle of the night using the boris bike stands like some kind of fair ground ride. I could even hear one complaining his bell wasn't working. Poor soul. People stagger around here shouting obscenities and all sorts all during the night. And we live in a nice part of London

Tim, concerning your post about 'dogs not being allowed', which I presume you meant on this Estate, may I point out that some disabled people, as defined under the earlier Disability Discrimination Act 1995, and now under the Equality Act 2010, may qualify for the right to have an 'Assistance dog', according to their needs.  Under the Act a local authority is obliged to 'make reasonable adjustments'  over a person's disability, and failure to do so is likely to amount to discrimination!   That is as the Law stands.                                                                   Tim Chapple said:

I guess we all have to be respectful of our neighbours living in such a high-density environment. Friends of ours who stayed recently in the Golden Lane guess flat were woken up by a range of noises: people talking loudly on their phones, shouting in the corridors, dogs barking (I thought dogs weren't allowed?).  I don't think they'll be coming again or I might have to supply ear plugs!

Interesting article Christine.................thanks for sharing.

I dont think its any easier in rural areas. I lived in two quiet villages. people complained of cocks crowing at dawn, light aircraft, lawn mowers, grain dryers, combine harvesters at night in late summer, hound pack kennels, angry wasp youth scooters and yes the odd party.Oh and the dawn chorus is amazingly loud

I feel for you as there is no escape realky apart from ear plugs, desensitising therapy or very good sound proofing

I often stay in the countryside with my dad and I love it. I would much rather hear noises like that than some drunken idiot screeching outside my flat and all the other lovely things I hear.

I will be looking at that article. Many thanks
