Richard Cloudesley school redevelopment
Islington Council are putting in a planning permission request to redevelop Richard Cloudesley school into housing. No details on the p.p. notices up outside the school on Golden Lane, just that an indication of the area to be redeveloped can be viewed inside the school (which I did, it's not very informative - just shows the floor plan of the school) and that there will be a chance to ask questions/ voice concerns on Weds 13th June (I think between 3 and 8).

I should imagine this would impact most heavily on Basterfield and Hatfifeld House - both of which overlook the site.

Anything that Islington Council proposes is worrying, especially housing! Their housing block in Goswell Road, overlooking Crescent House, has certainly got some very noisy people living there, though it has been a bit quieter lately.

The information on the Islington website is quite helpful as, at this stage, the issue is whether or not it is OK for Islington to dispose of a school site. Given the poor state that the building is in and the fact that it is a one floor building in an area which has traditionally had six-storey buildings, it would be useful to consider the best way of making the most of the site in a way which benefits both Golden Lane and the wider community.

I'd agree with concerns about height and density of the building (although both are probably to be expected). Is the meeting on 13 June at the site?

The drop-in meeting is taking place today (13th June) 3pm - 8pm at the former Richard Cloudesly School (Golden Lane).

Roland, for those of us not so well-versed in these things, could you clarify what a 'planning brief' is and why you would expect to see one at this stage? I understand (from the session yesterday) that this consultation is purely regarding whether or not to dispose of the site as one for educational use. Once Islington have the (presumed positive) response from the Secretary of State on that matter then they will move into the planning (to turn into housing) stage.

A bit more info and another planning meeting coming up - I received this email earlier this week:
Dear Sir / Madam
I understand that you recently attended a drop-in session held by the Council regarding the future of the former site of Richard Cloudesley School. I am contacting you because you left your contact details with colleagues at the session.
The Council will shortly be applying for consent to change the land use of the site from education to housing. This follows a recent public consultation on the Council's Finsbury Local Plan which addressed the principle of changing the use of this site. The Council's Site Allocations can be found at:

and the site is referred to at Page 181 as site BC34.
To help us understand your concerns about this site, and to answer any questions you have about the future of the site, we would like to invite you to a meeting at the Council's offices with Karen Sullivan, the Council's Director of Planning & Development.
I am aware that you may have work commitments so I would like to offer two possible dates/times, and will go for the one that most of you can make:
Monday 16th July 12.00pm - 1.30pm; or
Wednesday 18th July 6.00pm - 7.30pm

I haven't been following this discussion, have just come to it now, but wonder if anyone has asked the City of London Corporation about intentions for this site as they may have an interest in it.

FYI I was told last week that there is a new plan for the Richard Cloudesley site. I have done a little searching and found these two reports for Islington Council. (Links to the Islington Democracy website below.) I cannot tell from the Islington website whether these two reports have been approved.
In summary:- Islington propose to withdraw their request to Secretary Of State For Education for a change of use from education to residential for the site.
- Islington and the City Corporation are proposing to do a joint development on the site to provide an additional form of entry for nursery and primary school places, as well as a development of affordable homes for social rent.
- A feasibility study into the details of this is proposed.
(Also interestingly the report shows that in June 2013 when they were still thinking about a change of use of the site, that they had approved a recommendation to dispose of the site to Newlon Housing Trust for the building of 99 new homes [including 70% affordable housing].)
