Golden Baggers trip to Wakehurst

This year's Golden Baggers annual trip on Sunday 5th May was to Wakehurst in Sussex.

Wakehurst comprises a 16th century mansion house set in 500 acres of wild botanic garden, managed by the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. The gardens are designed as a living collection of woodland trees and plants including many rare species from across the globe which are grown especially for research, conservation and educational purposes. Different areas of the garden…

Climate Emergency - a challenge to Golden Lane Estate residents

The Climate Emergency declared across London over the past ten days has had a dramatic impact not only on the levels of publicity afforded to the issue of climate change but on Thursday turned the spotlight on the City of London. DISENFRANCHISEMENT OF RESIDENT VOTERS - PLEASE SIGN THE PETITION!

Dear Fellow Residents,

I am the only City of London councillor who lives on Golden Lane Estate. I’m being prevented from properly representing you, and from protecting and promoting our interests. You can help change this.

Background

Two years ago, I was elected with 558 votes - far more than any of the other 99 councillors in the City. I do not belong to a political party, and have no interest in a political career. I…

The trees bordering the allotments to be removed

In December the Planners decided that COLPAI had not made a strong enough case to discharge condition 5 relating to the retention of the trees bordering the allotments and referred the issue to a full Planning and Transportation Committee which was held on Tuesday 28 February. COLPAI application to discharge the condition was approved.

The Golden Baggers, objection the application were represented by Anna Parkinson and Jacqueline Swanson. Our resident Councillor, Sue Pearson was…

We would love to welcome you to the Charterhouse

The Charterhouse site between Barbican and Farringdon dates back to 1348 - and has been formally open to the public since January 2017, but we know that thousands of locals who live and/or work in the area still don't know it's there!  There are so many people who walk down Clerkenwell Road every day - and don't know what's hidden behind that great imposing wall with ivy spilling over the top.

The Charterhouse is both an extraordinary piece of history to have on your doorstep - and…

Media Story about City of London 'stonewalling' on financial arrangements

Minutes from a City of London Financial Investment Board meeting on March 22, published this month, showed a member queried why the Corporation had made loans to the (Northamptonshire County) council. The minutes state: “The chairman advised the board that the outstanding £20 million loan to Northamptonshire County Council was underwritten by central government. "A member raised a query about loans to local authorities that the board agreed to discuss as a non-public question relating to the…

There Are Biscuits. A personal view from the Islington Planning Meeting

The man in uniform knows a rabble rouser when he sees one. “Are these… persons with you?” he asks warily eyeing the group of thirty or so Golden Laneites who had braved the blizzard conditions and the strange bio-diesel tang of the No.4 bus to make it up Islington Town Hall. We review the troops.

The council’s porter was a man who’d seen a thing or two in his time. “Just keep it civilised, you know - have a coffee, have a cup of tea… no arguing with the…

Plans for re-landscaping Baltic Street - what do you think?

At the GLERA Meeting in January, we heard from Dominique Gagnon of Jamie Fobert Architects about his suggestions to re-landscape the area under the large sycamore tree on Baltic Street West, just outside the entrance to Crescent House and Hatfield House.

Dominique lives on Crescent Row, which fronts onto the site, and is an architect by profession. However, he's not planning to design the area himself or…
